Subject: FAQ
regarding BA 7070 and ACC 7310
Here are answers to the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) regarding the
two online business ethics courses, ACC 7310, Business and
Professional Ethics for Managers and Accountants, and BA 7070, Social Perspectives on the
Business Enterprise:
What is the "new" ACC 7310?
There has been an older description of ACC 7310 in
earlier editions of the Wayne State
University Graduate Bulletin. That
description (and the old prerequisite of ACC 7300) are outdated. As of
Fall 2007, the only prerequisite for ACC 7310 has been admission to a
graduate program.
Why is ACC 7310 an "accounting" course?
ACC 7310 is the business ethics course taken by
students who are
earning an MS in Accounting or an MS in Taxation. But, it is also
an
elective course for MBA students. A background in accounting is not
required for ACC 7310 students.
If I have already taken BA 7070, am I allowed to take ACC 7310?
Yes. Even though the course has many elements
that would seem
familiar to online BA 7070 students, it is an entirely different course
than BA 7070. It uses different textbooks than BA 7070, and
places
more emphasis on Sarbanes-Oxley than does BA 7070. MBA
students who are not accountants, and who are not emphasizing
accounting courses in their MBA progam, will find ACC 7310 to be very
accessible. Especially if they have already taken an online course such
as BA 7070.
If I have already taken ACC 7310, am I allowed to take BA 7070?
Yes (see above).
Is the content and subject matter of
BA 7070
and ACC 7310 the same?
No. Both courses address business
ethics, so they draw from the same larger body of knowledge. But
BA 7070 tends to emphasize basic ethical theory and critical thinking,
while
ACC 7310 tends to include a greater emphasis and focus on corporate
governance and professional ethics. Both courses include theory and
application., but the content of
BA 7070 is slightly more theoretical than the more "applied ethics"
approach of ACC 7310.
Can I take both ACC 7300
and ACC 7310 simultaneously during the same semester or term?
Yes. They may look quite similar at
first glance, but, after completing the first unit, students come to
realize that they are
quite different courses. Of course, some (but not all) of the
current Wall Street Journal readings
(as well as other readings and discussions pertaining to current
events) will be incorporated into both courses.
